Battling the Potato Bugs

Battling the Potato Bugs

Every morning and evening after supper my favorite pass time is to walk out to the garden. I stroll up and down the luscious green rows of veggies that we have planted and worked so hard on. Controlling the weeds, packing water, and all of the other fun stuff.

The last thing I would have thought I would have found was these nasty potato bugs. But there they were… When I first saw them, It was on one of my evening strolls. I quickly ran to my husband, Darian, and told him, “we have a problem!” I want to spray them, shake them or something right then and there. However, as I was showing him, thunder was rolling behind us. A storm was coming. To my discouragement, I had to leave my precious potato plants out in the field with there critters. There was nothing I could do to help them. They had to defend for themselves.

That night we got so much rain. And it rained for the next two days and nights. Let’s just say, I had some sleepless nights and fretful days. Now, I know you may think that as dramatic or over reacting. But this is the food that I feed my family with all winter long. It’s not just potatoes to me, it’s something tasty and warm in my families belly come December.

When the rain finely stopped, I slipped my rubber boots on and hiked on out to the garden. I wanted to check on my potatoes, but also all the other veggies in the garden. I could tell before I even got to the garden that my potatoes where damaged. They were yellow when brown dead spots on their leaves. Some leaves where completely gone, some was only a green stalk sticking up. Devastated doesn’t even begin to say how I truly felt when this was the sight I saw.

I don’t like to spray anything, I like to do damage control myself. But with another rain storm coming, I knew that I needed to do something quick and fast. I researched and found a product that had something called Spinosad. It’s considered organic and okay to spray in an organic garden. I ordered it on amazon, but it was going to be a few days. These Colorado Beetles in a couple days went from just a few to thousands. It’s really unreal how fast they multiplied.

We decided to call our local amish greenhouse store, he has a lot of sprays, and I was praying for them to have it. To my surprise they did! I jumped in the truck and headed that way. Thanking God the whole time, cause I have worked so hard for us to have potatoes this winter. When my husband got home, we went back out to the garden to spray. I was hoping it would work fast. Rain was coming once again. Darian sprayed all three rows over and over again. Making sure he got all the leaves under side and top side. Now it was the hard part… Waiting to see if it worked.

The next morning my husband and I got up, grabbed our coffee, and strolled to the garden. We were both full of curiosity, wondering how the spray worked. To our surprise, they was GONE!! We couldn’t believe it. The Colorado Beetles was dead and gone. We was so excited and thankful that it worked so well. We’ve worked so hard for this crop and its very disappointing when critters take it instead of us. I know it’s natural but that doesn’t make it hurt any less.

If you want a good spray to help your potato crop along. This one really does work ( https://amzn.to/4la0OzN ), I hope your having wonderful adventures on your homestead too! Till next week, Plant Happy!
