What a Harvest!

Hello my friends, I pray you are having a great week. This week we have been super busy, but that’s just the season we are in. This is the time we are harvesting the spring crops, canning and preserving, but also working and getting things ready for the fall garden. This week the biggest job we done was the potato harvest. This was so much fun, and a family event.
The first thing we did was, my husband didn’t want to dig the potatoes by hand. So, he started researching and looking at another way we could harvest. After googling and asking all his friends, he settled on the potato plow. So, we ordered one and waited for it to arrive. Luckily, when it did, it had quit raining enough for the ground to dry up enough for us to get in there.
Darian hooked up the plow and made sure all the do dads worked. Ok, so if you know me, you know my excitement is through the roof right now! He came up to the house and got me, to help him set the tables up. We just used old tables we had leftover from the flower greenhouse and some old 2×4’s. We all built and stacked the tables, we done them under the carport, cause that’s the only place we had the space. It wasn’t the idea location, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. After the tables where stacked and in place we got the tarp we bought, and hung it up around the porch poles. Now, this didn’t look pretty in the front of the house, but it worked and that all that matters to me.

Now, that everything was ready, we headed out to the garden, I was on the ranger, Darian on the tractor, and Makayla and her family was coming up on the golf cart. We call her Golfie! We all stood to the side out of the tractors way, waiting and watching anxiously to see if the plow would work. Darian lined up the tractor and put the blue plow down…. 3…2…1…. Here he goes…… It worked! The potatoes were rolling up all over the hills. This was amazing!! I was so excited !! But all I could do was Praise God !! God has been so good to my family and I. It’s so wonderful to see the harvest that you have prayed for come to be. Not all the time it works out, like my zucchini !! But God gives us what we need. And He is so, so good!!

After the first row was plowed we picked up all the potatoes, and put them in the back of the ranger. Then we did the next row and the next. It took us about an hour and a half to plow and pick up all the potatoes. At this time it was getting dark and it was passed the kids bedtimes. But most of all, we all needed a bath ! Especially when I put my hand on a rotten potato and I stepped on one barefooted too. Yes, it was so, so gross!! So a bath was so necessary !! We took the ranger and parked it in the building so it would be dry and safe. We would finish them in the morning.

The next morning, we had our grandson go get the ranger and back it up to the carport. We then had to separate and unload all the potatoes on the tables. We decied to fill five gallon buckets and pour them out on the wire racks. This was a hot job, but we got it done. Our grandson was a big help! It looked so good getting it all done. Now, we wait…. wait for them to cure. This will take about 2 weeks, then we will put them in our cold room aka an extra fridge right now lol. That’s where they will be kept for storage.
That’s what has been happening on the homestead this week. We have had a great week, after last week lol. I sure did need it. I pray you have a great week also. We here at Little Clifty Homestead will be praying for each and everyone of you.
